HUD Community Service and Self-Sufficiency Requirement
BHA would like to remind Housing Authority residents of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development HUD community service and self-sufficiency requirement. This requirement is intended to assist adult public housing residents in becoming economically self-sufficient, as well as encourage resident involvement and service to their communities.
All adult BHA residents, except those exempt based on age, disability or employment, are required to give at least 8 hours each month either by doing community service or by participating in an economic self-sufficiency program.
According to HUD regulations, failure to complete the required hours may result in termination of your lease.

Exemptions:
The only adult residents exempt from this requirement are residents who are:
- Age 62 or older
- Blind or disabled, and who certify that because of their disability they are unable to comply with the service provisions, or primary caretakers of such individuals.
- Engaged in work activities as defined in section 407(d) of the Social Security Act (42 U.S.C. 607(d)), specified below:
- Unsubsidized employment;
- Subsidized private-sector employment;
- Subsidized public-sector employment
- Work experience (including work associated with eh refurbishing of publicly assisted housing) if sufficient private sector employment is not available
- On-the-job training
- Job-search and job-readiness assistance;
- Community Service programs;
- Vocational educational training (not to exceed 12 months with respect to any individual);
- Job skills training directly related to employment
- Education directly related to employment in the case of a recipient who has not received a high school diploma or a certificate of high school equivalency;
- Satisfactory attendance at secondary school or in a course of study leading to a certificate of general equivalence, in the case of a recipient who has not received a high school diploma or a certificate of high school equivalency;
- The provision of childcare services to an individual who is participating in a community service program
